Pet owners want the best for their animals, including giving them the best possible diet. In recent years, many pet parents have begun to look at home-cooked meals, or sometimes fresh meals consisting entirely of raw foods. Some argue that a raw food diet leads to a glossier coat, healthier teeth, and a better overall. health For dogs.

Raw food is uncooked food, primarily meat, which can be homemade by pet owners or purchased frozen.Recently Studies from Portugal, But found it while being commercial Dog food Of all kinds, some nasty bacteria can be lurking, and raw dog food is at high risk of infecting antibiotic-resistant bacteria and can harm immunocompromised pets and people. There is sex. Antibiotic resistance.. Of the 14 commercial frozen raw dog foods tested in this study, all 14 were positive for drug-resistant enterococcal strains.

Dogs probably enjoy eating raw meat (hopefully we can ask them), but many experts don’t recommend it because of the bacteria found in raw foods. Hmm. NS American Veterinary Association Pet owners feed animals “unprocessed to eliminate pathogens” such as cooking and pasteurization because of the risk of food poisoning that can spread and affect livestock and humans, especially children. “Preventing” giving. Elderly people and people with immunodeficiency.

“This is a real public health concern,” says Dr. Camille Torres, a veterinarian and director of small animal nutrition services at Colorado State University. “It sometimes comes up as if it were a new topic, but we’ve known this for years.”

We talked to Torres about giving raw food to pets to learn more about the potential risks and benefits of a raw food diet.

Why raw dog food?

Raw food ideas for dogs began after Australian veterinarian Dr. Ian Billinghurst published a book on how dogs behave. Prosper with an evolutionary diet It consisted primarily of raw meat, organs, bones and vegetables and supported them before domestication.

Torres sympathizes with pet owners who are considering a raw food diet. Because she wants to do her best for her pet from their point of view.

“From the pet owner’s point of view, this is a rather delicate topic, as I think there is a lot of passion for nutrition in general and a strong desire to eat the best,” says Torres.

What are the risks and benefits?

Raw food proponents claim that it offers many benefits to dogs, including healthier teeth, skin and coats, as well as more energy. Torres says there is little evidence to prove the benefits of feeding pets raw food, but there is evidence of health risks such as exposure to pathogenic bacteria.

“It’s not that it didn’t make a profit, it’s just that those profits haven’t been proven yet,” Torres says. “Basically, we don’t have a lot of evidence to support professionals, and there is evidence to support risks to people and their environment as well as our pets.”

Does all raw meat contain bacteria? Is it all bad?

All uncooked meat contains bacteria, Torres says. “It’s a matter of kind.”

“If you get rid of one of the big ways cooking can reduce bacterial contamination, whether it’s chicken or beef, it’s in the food,” says Torres. “So whether it’s from the cleanest grocery store, whether it’s organic and natural, or labeled … there’s bacterial contamination.”

Torres also says that the immune system works well against (usually) harmful bacteria, so you may not see many sick dogs, but if not, it’s a big problem.

“It’s inside out-yes, most dogs and cats may be okay,” says Torres. “But if they’re not okay, they really get really sick,” says Salmonella, which can enter the lining of the intestine and cause an inflammatory response. She says immunocompromised dogs, puppies, and older dogs are at particular risk.

How can bacteria from raw food spread to humans?

Fecal contamination can infect dogs with harmful bacteria from dogs to humans and other pets in the home, even if the feces are invisible, Torres said.

“It could be on their feet and they walk in,” Torres says. “They get on our couch and get on our bed, those types. That’s the challenge-you can only clean what you know is there.”

When it comes to how serious bacterial contamination is, “it’s a question of what we are exposed to and what our bodies can fight,” says Torres. Like pets, she says most people are okay, but pollution can have serious consequences, such as dehydration and hospitalization.

How about prevention?

If you’re crazy about feeding your pet raw, “be careful about cleaning the environment and what the food comes in contact with,” Torres says. She says she washes the dishes and ideally has no raw food in your kitchen (or where you prepare your own food).

It is also important to improve hygiene in general, such as washing your hands after playing with your pet and getting into the habit of washing your hands and face when licked. “These types are just for trying to stay as healthy as possible,” says Torres.
