Jan. 18—Allied Services Hospice nurses, aides and social workers have adopted patients’ pets when the patients were no longer able to care for them.

Most of the time, pets of hospice patients go to family and friends, but occasionally they’re left without a home.

To make sure the animals are as well cared for as their owners, Allied Services Hospice is now offering the Pet Peace of Mind program to assist with finding homes for the furry friends of patients nearing the end of their lives.

President-elect Joe Biden’s rescue dog, Major, received his own swearing-in to the White House on Sunday, which included a fundraiser for the shelter from which he was adopted, as well as a performance by singer-songwriter and dog lover Josh Groban.

During coronavirus, animal shelters don’t have enough dogs for the demand

“We thought people would stop adopting because they would need to conserve their money,” said Cindy Sharpley, founder and director of Last Chance Animal Rescue, a nonprofit animal shelter in Waldorf. “But that hasn’t happened. It’s been just the opposite. They’re going like hot cakes. We can hardly keep them in stock.”

Last Chance saw its pet adoptions — mostly dogs — increase 30 to 40 percent last year over 2019. Lucky Dog Animal Rescue in Arlington said it expected to finish 2020 helping about 3,385 pets find homes, up from about 1,800 the year before.
