I can measure my life from very early childhood by the dogs who have been my boon companions — Frisky, Pooh, Mickey, Sebastian, T-Bone, Suzy Q, Zebedee, McKinley, Lizzie Lou and Bela B. Except for the first couple Of years in college and time spent in the service, I have never been without canine friends — and can’t imagine ever being.

This puts me firmly in the company of a substantial portion of the population that enjoys significant health benefits from such relationships, according to what ongoing scientific research indicates and what those of us who have dogs and cats intuitively know for a fact.

Sorrow, loneliness, depression, isolation — all these maladies have a good chance of being mitigated by the inclusion in one’s life of a furry companion.
