Welcome to the Laurel Daily! Here you will find fun events going on this week, including pets up for adoption, new local government appointments announced by Mayor Craig Moe, and the 52nd Annual Laurel Art Guild Juried Exhibition.

Weather Report:

Today, the weather will be humid and warm, reaching a high of 93 degrees. A strong afternoon thunderstorm that may bring hail and damaging winds are expected.

Here are the top three stories in Laurel today:

1. Add a furry friend to your family and give back to the Laurel community at the same time by adopting a pet! Local animal shelters put several pets up for adoption over the past week. If you need some help in your search, Patch and Petfinder put together a list each week of all the pets recently put up for adoption in your area. Click on any listing for more information, or to start the adoption process. (Patch)

2. Laurel Mayor Craig Moe announced the new appointments of LouAnn Crook to city administrator, Christian Pulley to deputy city administrator and Robert Love to the position of director of the Department of Economic and Community Development. Moe announced the appointments during the virtual mayor and City Council meeting May 10 and the council confirmed all three new appointments. (Baltimore Sun)

3. According to Jacob Baumgart, Patch staff writer, Tavon Barnes was found guilty of murdering Karim Thomas in Greenbelt in 2018. On May 17, jurors convicted Thomas of first degree murder and using a firearm during a crime of violence. A judge will sentence Barnes on August 17. He could spend life plus 20 years in prison.
