JACKSON COUNTY, MI — The Jackson County Animal Shelter’s adoptable pets will be available for a $25 adoption fee this week.
The reduced adoption fee is part of the empty the shelters event in collaboration with the Bissell Pet Foundation.
Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, this was a one-day event. However, to space out the rush, the event will last from May 5-9. No appointments are necessary.
As of Monday, May 3, the shelter has about 20 dogs and 30 or more cats, but numbers tend to fluctuate quickly, said Marc Daly, volunteer manager. The $25 adoption fee is available regardless of the pet’s age or size, but Daly said it is unlikely any puppies will be available.
For those who already have their eye on a pet at the shelter, don’t wait, Daly said.
“My suggestion would be to come in now and not to wait for the Bissell empty the shelter event because there’s no guarantee the one you’re interested in now will be available,” Daly said.
Those wanting to adopt a pet should complete the application in advance and bring it with them to the event. If you have a dog currently, it should be brought along to the adoption to do a meet and greet.
The shelter will operate during normal business hours for the event: 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday; 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. It is located at 3370 Spring Arbor Road.
While the shelter is closed on Sunday, cats will be available for a $25 adoption fee at the Jackson PetSmart and Pet Supplies Plus.
The shelter will also host a flea market and yard sale on Saturday, May 8.
