People are trapped in their homes and horses and other large animals are being rescued after a mudslide near the River Fire burn scar. According to Monterey County Regional Fire officials, heavy rain overnight caused mud and other debris to move through properties on River Road south of Salinas. As of Wednesday morning, the hillside above River Road was still considered unstable. Firefighters reported that some people were blocked in their homes. Two dogs belonging to one family, attacked and killed a cat, belonging to a neighbor, Linda Gallant.

For Gallant, her 8-year-old cat Trinity was more than just a pet.
