COVID-19 vaccine for pets? New study suggests cats, dogs may need the coronavirus vaccine too

AVON LAKE, Ohio (WJW) — As more people become inoculated against COVID-19, a group of researchers says cats and dogs may need to be vaccinated as well.

In an editorial published in the medical journal Virulence, those scientists warn about “significant long-term risk to public health” due to viral evolution.

“I think the questions are how common are the infections in animals, especially dogs and cats, but also farmed and domesticated animals?” said Ohio State University Distinguished University Professor Dr. Linda Saif of the question researchers are asking.

Summit County animal shelter, rescue nonprofit and owner team up to find missing dog after 35 cold days

Jade, a yellow Labrador retriever, was found in Fairplay on Tuesday, Jan. 19, after surviving 35 days in the windy winter elements.

Lesley Hall, director of Summit County Animal Control and Shelter, called the rescue a “huge team effort” between the shelter, local pet-finding nonprofit Summit Lost Pet Rescue and Dwight Winter, who had recently adopted Jade.

Jade had been transferred to the Summit County shelter from New Mexico before she was adopted

Mending the Hearts of a Beloved Dog Breed

Suzanne Cunningham, a veterinary cardiologist and associate professor at Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine, loves boxer dogs, but they’ve been breaking her heart since she was a child.

As a breed, boxers are prone to a type of heart disease called arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy (ARVC), which humans can get, too. It’s a disease of little junctions between heart muscle cells called desmosomes. The desmosomes weaken, and the heart cells pull apart, leaving scar tissue. The disease can go undetected in people and dogs without symptoms, leading to abnormal heart rhythms, enlargement of the heart, and even death.
